The University of Oulu has highlighted pioneering efforts in equality and inclusion by granting an honorary mention for the Equality and Diversity Award to Oulu EMJM Promise Coordinator Maria Sinche Gonzalez. Her work within the ERASMUS Mundus PROMISE Master’s programme has significantly advanced gender equality in a field where women have historically been underrepresented.
Promoting Inclusive Excellence in Mining Education
Under Gonzalez’s leadership, the PROMISE programme has reshaped the learning environment for emerging professionals in mining and raw materials. The programme stands out for its balanced gender representation, multicultural student body, and educational approach that integrates academic excellence with positive societal impact.
Her work has contributed to an environment where:
- The proportion of women students exceeds industry averages
- Students from a wide range of cultural backgrounds engage in collaborative, inclusive learning
- Pedagogical practices actively support both intellectual achievement and societal responsibility
These accomplishments demonstrate how targeted actions within a single programme can influence broader academic and industrial landscapes.
Recognition from the University Community
Honorary mention recipients were nominated by members of the University of Oulu community. The distinctions presented by Director of Human Resources Jarmo Okkonen, were announced on 21 November 2025 during the Children’s Day at Work event.
A Tradition of Advancing Equality and Diversity
Since 2009, the University of Oulu has presented the Equality and Diversity Award to recognise contributions that strengthen inclusion across the university. The award raises awareness of the importance of equitable practices and highlights individuals and teams who demonstrate leadership in transforming academic environments.
This year’s honorary mention to Maria Sinche Gonzalez is a clear example of how thoughtful educational leadership can expand participation, elevate underrepresented voices, and shape the future of essential sectors such as mining and raw materials.
